The Syrian Army began shelling Kurdish-majority districts in Aleppo on Wednesday after a government-set deadline for civilians to leave expired, raising fears of a broader offensive in the war-torn city.
The military had declared the predominantly Kurdish neighbourhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh “closed military zones" starting at 3 pm local time and ordered residents to evacuate through two so-called “safe humanitarian crossings." Thousands of civilians were seen fleeing the areas before the deadline passed, according to AFP correspondents.
The army’s designation of the districts as closed zones came amid renewed clashes between government forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which have held sway in the neighbourhoods as part of the wider SDF–Syrian transitional government clashes that have intensified since late December.
