The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has executed a number of unarmed people since capturing the Sudanese city of el-Fasher.
According to a statement by RSF, it has seized el-Fasher “from the grip of mercenaries and militias allied with the terrorist army".
This was a huge blow to the Sudanese army as el-Fasher was its last remaining foothold in the Darfur region.
According to BBC, several videos have since emerged showing men wearing military fatigues and some with what appear to be RSF patches carrying out extreme acts of violence around el-Fasher.
BBC quoted local pro-army fighters, the Popular Resistance, accusing the RSF of running a “media disinformation campaign" to undermine the “high morale of the forces".
The United Nations Sudan coordinator said it had received “credible reports of summary executions" in the city during an interview with the BBC on Wednesday.
The RSF controls almost all of Darfur and much of the neighbouring Kordofan region.
However, Imran Abdullah, an adviser to the paramilitary, has rejected that the group’s fighters were targeting civilians in an interview with the BBC on Monday.
Sudan has been facing conflict since 2023 after top commanders of the RSF and Sudanese army fell out.
According to BBC, more than 150,000 people have died across the country and about 12 million have fled their homes, creating one of the worst humanitarian crises.
BBC quoted UN’s Sudan coordinator, Denise Brown, as saying that she had received reports of executions against “unarmed men in particular" since the RSF entered el-Fasher.
