SPML Infra shares rose after winning a ₹1,128 crore NTPC contract to build a 1 GWh BESS at Barauni in Bihar, its first large grid project, boosting its energy storage push.

Shares of SPML Infra Ltd. rose on Wednesday, May 6, after the company secured a ₹1,128-crore contract from NTPC Ltd. to develop a 1 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at NTPC’s Barauni Thermal Power Station in Bihar.

The company said the project marks its first large-scale grid Battery Energy Storage System project and is among the largest single BESS orders awarded in India.

The scope of work includes supply, civil works and erection of a 250 MW/1,000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System comprising 5 MWh DC containers equipped with Battery Management System (BMS) and Thermal Management System (TMS), along with 33 kV panel boards, 220 kV DC and AC cables, a 220 kV switchyard and associated accessories.

SPML Infra said the project will be executed over an 18-month period, followed by 15 years of operation and maintenance.

The company said the project will integrate large-scale battery storage with existing thermal power infrastructure to support peak load management, grid stability and renewable energy integration.

“This order marks a defining moment for SPML Infra, a firm commitment to the large-scale battery energy storage sector,” said Abhinandan Sethi, Managing Director of SPML Infra.

“Energy storage will define how India powers its future, and we intend to be architects of that transformation. Partnering with NTPC on this landmark project is both a privilege and a responsibility we embrace fully,” he added.

The infrastructure company said the order strengthens its strategic push into energy storage infrastructure and advances its partnership with technology provider Energy Vault Holdings Inc. for battery energy storage solutions in India.

Shares of SPML Infra rose following the order win and were trading at ₹223.61, up 4.57%. The stock has jumped 28% over the past month and more than 33% in the last one year.
