A screengrab from an old rap video of NYC mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani
Ever since Indian-origin Zohran Mamdani created history by winning the New York mayoral elections, avid social media users have dug up the Democrat's past to find hidden gems about his beginnings. On Friday, Stereogum, a popular music magazine, stumbled upon a 2017 email sent by Mamdani, who was then trying to make a name for himself as a rapper.
"Sorry, we missed this, Mr Mayor-Elect," Stereogum, which features album reviews, tweeted, while attaching a screenshot of an email sent by Mamdani on March 27, 2017.
In the email, Mamdani, then an aspiring rapper who went by the name Mr Cardamom, requested Stereogum to write about his new composition, titled 'Salaam'. However, it seems the mail by Mamdani, who was relatively unknown then, went unnoticed.
"I am a rapper here in NYC and have just released a new song titled 'Salaam'. It is about what it means to be a Muslim in America today - the fear, and the roots of that fear. It would be a dream if someone at Stereogum would write about this in any which way. Do you think that would be possible?" Mamdani wrote.
