Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir is once again witnessing public demonstrations as people took to the streets to protest over unmet demands.

The Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC) launched a ‘shutter-down strike’ in Poonch over severe power cuts, as the ongoing political unrest in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) intensified this week.

The JKJAAC organised protests across PoK, primarily fuelled by widespread, extensive power outages and the administration’s failure to deliver on critical commitments made just weeks ago. It has escalated its action by mobilising a “shutter-down strike" throughout all four districts of the Poonch division.

This move is specifically in response to what protesters described as the longest load shedding experienced in the area. Demonstrators gathered in significant numbers across Rawalakot, Poonch division, and surrounding areas, with the major rallies converging in Bagh.

They maintained a peaceful yet firm stance against the administration, chanting slogans against the federal government. Their grievances are deeply rooted, as they have been repeated during previous protests held between September 29 and October 5.

While authorities contend with sustained internal conflicts, the immediate trigger for the widespread power outages is attributed to recent floods in the region that damaged electrical towers. The electricity department is reportedly working on the maintenance and restoration of these towers, but efforts have not been enough to quell public anger over the prolonged disruption.

The political situation remains highly volatile. The JKJAAC issued a stern warning to the government stating that if all demands are not fulfilled, the protests against the administration will be more widespread.
