Many laptop users often wonder whether it is harmful to keep their devices plugged in all the time. A recent online post reignited this debate after one person shared a photo of a laptop charging and a question that left many curious.

The simple post sparked hundreds of responses from curious users. Many shared their experiences and explained how modern laptops manage power in ways most people don’t realise.

The post shows an image where a laptop is charging with a glowing light on the connector, a familiar sight for many. Above it, the post read, “Keeping your laptop plugged in is less damaging to the battery than constantly draining and refilling it. I always thought it was the opposite."

The caption reflected what many users believed for years, that leaving a laptop plugged in might overwork or damage the battery.

Users Share What Really Happens When You Keep It Plugged In

Soon after, people began sharing what they knew about how laptop batteries actually work.

A user on Reddit explained, “Nowadays, most if not all, laptops, including MacBooks, pull power straight from the adapter once the battery is fully charged. If you always use it on AC power, it’s practically like using a desktop."

Another added, “My laptop battery swelled up a year ago, so I removed it. Since then, I have been using it directly without any issues."

Some mentioned that keeping a laptop plugged in doesn’t drain the battery because the system automatically stops charging once it reaches 100 percent.

A commenter wrote, “Draining and charging causes the battery to cycle which reduces its capacity. Not draining it and maintaining the charge level means fewer cycles and slower battery wear."

Another added, “To maximise battery life, you can limit the charge to 80 per cent or less in newer laptops. After that, it starts running directly on power."

Others shared that some manufacturers now include features that detect when a laptop is mostly used on a desk and adjust charging patterns automatically. One said, “Yeah, my MacBook (2007) battery failed in 2010 and I had to get it replaced, but for a week, I ran it plugged in with no problems."
