Nifty, Sensex turn weak as H-1B visa issue drags IT names

Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights: The stock market ended lower on Monday, dragged down by a sharp sell-off in information technology counters as concerns around H-1B visas weighed on sentiment. The Nifty IT index slumped more than 3%, with all its constituents closing in the red. Large-cap IT stocks fell 2–3%, while midcap names declined up to 5%.

Auto stocks closed mixed despite the GST rate cut, with the Nifty Auto index edging lower by 0.3 percent. Pharma shares also came under pressure, led by losses in Cipla and Glenmark. Among individual movers, KFin Technologies fell 5 percent on reports of a potential stake sale by private equity firm General Atlantic.

In contrast, Adani Group shares extended their Friday rally, surging up to 20 percent across the pack. Muthoot Finance rose 4 percent as gold prices hit fresh record highs, while NBCC and Netweb gained 4–6 percent on order wins. Hindustan Copper advanced 6 percent after securing an extension of its mining lease. Shipbuilding companies also witnessed strong buying, with Shipping Corporation of India and Garden Reach Shipbuilders climbing 3–4 percent after the sector was granted infrastructure status.

Overall, the session was dominated by weakness across key sectors, with IT, pharma and midcaps bearing the brunt of the sell-off, while select pockets like metals, infra-linked names and gold financiers provided some relief.
