Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights: Markets ended largely flat on the first day of the new year, with the Nifty managing to hold above the 26,100 mark, as gains in financials and midcaps offset pressure from select heavyweights.

The Sensex slipped 32 points to 85,189, while the Nifty added 17 points to close at 26,147. Broader markets outperformed the benchmarks, with market breadth favouring advances. The Nifty Bank rose 130 points to 59,712, while the midcap index gained 266 points to 60,750.

A sharp 9% fall in ITC, after the government raised excise duty, capped upside on the Nifty. Shriram Finance emerged as the top Nifty gainer, rising 3%, while Bajaj Auto climbed 3% ahead of monthly sales data. Auto stocks such as M&M and Ashok Leyland also moved higher after reporting healthy December volumes.

In the midcap space, JSW Energy, PNB Housing Finance, Astral and Supreme Industries gained 3–4%. APL Apollo Tubes rose 3% after reporting strong Q3 volume growth.

On the downside, Avenue Supermarts slipped 2% ahead of its quarterly update, while PB Fintech declined amid RBI concerns over higher commissions for insurance companies. MCX ended 1% lower due to profit booking.
