The Nifty Bank index remained under pressure, declining 392 points to 53,975, while the midcap index gained 565 points to close at 57,030.
Information technology stocks witnessed profit booking, while financial stocks remained under pressure. Capital market stocks extended their gains amid reports around long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax and the securities transaction tax (STT), with BSE rising over 2%.
Among individual stocks, Tata Consumer Products was the top Nifty gainer, jumping nearly 7% after its second-quarter results were largely in line with expectations. APL Apollo Tubes rose over 6% following positive management commentary, while Bharti Airtel gained over 3% after the release of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's subscriber data for September.
Newly listed stocks also saw strong buying interest. SMT gained 20%, while Tonbo rose nearly 6%.
Cipla ended with minor losses after reporting results largely in line with expectations, although its US sales performance fell slightly short. Sona BLW Precision Forgings jumped 9%, while Aegis Logistics declined over 6% following their respective second-quarter results.
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders fell sharply, losing over 6% after reporting weak second-quarter results.
Healthcare stocks Apollo Hospitals Enterprise and Max Healthcare Institute pared their gains in the final hour of trade amid developments surrounding a drug-pricing case in the Supreme Court.
Ather Energy extended its gains, rising further after its second-quarter results on Monday, taking its advance to 21% since the announcement.
Auto stocks also ended higher, with Bajaj Auto gaining over 3% and Maruti Suzuki India rising 2% following their second-quarter results.
