Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights: Indian benchmark indices ended in the red on Wednesday but recovered sharply from their lows. The Sensex fell 188 points to 77,967, while the Nifty declined 36 points to close at 24,436.

Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights: Indian benchmark indices ended in the red on Wednesday but recovered sharply from their lows. The Sensex fell 188 points to 77,967, while the Nifty declined 36 points to close at 24,436.

The Nifty Bank gained 440 points to 57,886, closing at the day’s high, as financial stocks led the recovery. The midcap index fell 180 points to 64,024 but continued to outperform the benchmark indices.


Market breadth remained in favour of declines, with the advance-decline ratio at 3:4.


Tata stocks were among the top Nifty losers after N Chandra sought no reappointment following the end of his term. TCS, Tata Steel, Tata Motors PV and Tata Consumer Products were among the stocks that declined.


Hospital stocks fell following reports related to capping of charges, with Max Healthcare and Fortis Healthcare down 3–5%.


Hindalco and Nalco rose 3–8% after Norsk Hydro cut alumina output. PSU banks continued to see buying, with PNB and Union Bank rising up to 4%.


Telecom stocks gained following reports of a selective tariff hike by Bharti Airtel, with Vodafone Idea rising 3%. MCX gained 3% after SEBI's paper on FPIs in commodity derivatives.


Bosch extended its gaining streak, rising another 3% following positive commentary, while LIC gained another 3%, building on Monday’s rise.


PI Industries declined 9% after weak Q1 earnings and a cautious outlook.
