Russian college stabbing: Teen attacker was a neo-Nazi, painted swastika on wall

The 15-year-old boy who broke into a medical college hostel in Russia's Ufa and attacked four Indian students, among others, was a member of a neo-Nazi group, according to local media. He is also said to have drawn a Nazi swastika on a wall using the victims’ blood.

"He belonged to the banned NS/WP neo-Nazi organisation. During the frenzy of attack, he was shouting nationalist slogans about (the) Holocaust," The Baza channel, which has links to Russian security apparatus, claimed.

The channel also shared a photograph purportedly showing a swastika drawn on the wall with the victims’ blood. Another Russian newspaper, Izvestia, also reported the teenager held neo-Nazi views.

Neo-Nazi organisations revive and promote the ideology of Nazism, the far-right political doctrine based on hatred and racism, associated with Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in 20th century Germany.

The teenage assailant armed with a knife attacked students at a dormitory attached to the State Medical University in Ufa, leaving multiple people wounded -- including four Indian nationals and two police officers. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic, bloody scene inside the dormitory and said students and staff were rushed to safety.

The attacker allegedly resisted arrest and also inflicted injuries on himself before being detained. “The attacker resisted arrest, during which two police officers were stabbed. Furthermore, the suspect also inflicted bodily harm on himself,” Russia's Interior Ministry said.

The Indian Embassy in Moscow confirmed that four Indian students were among those injured and said it was in touch with local authorities; officials from India’s consulate in Kazan were dispatched to Ufa to assist the students and their families. The embassy’s statement and follow-up consular action underline New Delhi’s immediate engagement after the attack.

However, the Russian authorities have not yet disclosed a possible motive or whether the suspect had any prior connection with the victims.
