Russia hit Kyiv overnight with missiles and drones, damaging homes across the capital. The barrage underscored an intensified campaign as emergency crews raced to rescue trapped residents.
Russia launched a large-scale overnight attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, with ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones, killing at least eight people and injuring dozens. Loud explosions shook the city for hours, and many residents took shelter in metro stations after warnings were issued by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other authorities.
Officials said the attack damaged buildings and civilian infrastructure across Kyiv, with destruction reported at 28 locations, mostly residential buildings and other civilian sites. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 34 people were injured, while Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, said eight people were killed.
Russia has stepped up its attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks, even as Ukraine has carried out its own long-range drone strikes on Russian military sites and energy facilities, causing fuel shortages and disrupting supply lines inside Russia. Klitschko urged residents to stay in shelters and described the bombardment as a continuing "furious enemy attack" on the capital.
In the Shevchenkivskyi district, five people were injured and one of them, a paramedic, was in an extremely critical condition, Klitschko said. Ukraine's Emergency Service said a hotel and two five-storey residential buildings were damaged there. In the Desnianskyi district, people were trapped inside a damaged nine-storey residential building and rescuers were sent to the scene, according to the mayor.
The Emergency Service said a fire broke out on the roof of a 16-storey building in the Holosiivskyi district. In the Sviatoshynskyi district, fires broke out in two private homes, and debris trapped people in one of them, Klitschko said. In the Darnytskyi district, six floors of a nine-storey building collapsed after a Russian strike and another five-storey residential building was damaged. The Emergency Service added that a 16-storey building and private homes were also damaged in the area.
Tkachenko said the attack partly destroyed a residential building in the Desnianskyi district, caused fires near residential buildings at two locations in the Pecherskyi district, and sparked a fire near an administrative building in the Solomianskyi district. He said damage was also being recorded in the Obolonskyi and Podilskyi districts. Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the Kyiv Regional Administration, said damage was reported in five districts of the wider region, though there were no immediate reports of casualties there. Overall, the overnight strike left multiple parts of Kyiv damaged, several people dead and dozens injured as emergency teams responded across the city.
