Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov held a phone call with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi to discuss the escalating situation in the Middle East, Moscow said. The conversation comes amid intensifying regional tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel, with Moscow maintaining close diplomatic contact with Tehran as the conflict unfolds.

Earlier, Araghchi rejected calls for an immediate ceasefire, saying Iran must continue its military response. In an interview with NBC, the Iranian foreign minister said Iran needed “to continue fighting for the sake of our people," accusing the United States and Israel of targeting civilians and infrastructure.

In the interview, the Iranian minister also acknowledged longstanding cooperation between Tehran and Russia. Responding to reports that Moscow may be sharing intelligence with Iran about US military positions in the region, Araghchi said earlier that collaboration between the two countries “is not something new" and added that Russia has been assisting Iran “in many different directions," though he did not provide specifics.

Western officials raised concerns about the growing strategic alignment between Russia and Iran during the conflict. US officials have described the relationship as “symbiotic," while also arguing that any assistance provided by Moscow has not significantly altered the battlefield dynamics so far.

Meanwhile, Iranian leaders have attempted to ease tensions with neighboring Gulf countries after Iranian strikes in the region caused casualties. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran would avoid targeting neighboring states unless they facilitate attacks by the United States or Israel and issued an apology to populations affected by recent strikes.

Araghchi has also insisted that Iran’s military actions are directed at US military assets in the region rather than neighboring states themselves, noting that American bases are located on the territory of several Gulf countries.
