The banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) struck deep inside Pakistan’s Balochistan province, overrunning the Mastung Police Station in a dramatic assault that has shocked security officials and underscored growing insurgent capabilities. In the widely circulated new video released by the BLA’s Hakkal Media Center, armed fighters are shown storming the station on January 31, ransacking offices and detaining personnel. The footage appears to show the station’s staff made hostage and extensive damage to records, while piles of government arms and ammunition — described in local accounts as “hundreds of rifles and thousands of bullets" — were seized and taken away by the militants.

The attack formed part of a spate of coordinated operations by militant groups across Balochistan, which security sources say included assaults on multiple police outposts, a high-security prison and infrastructure in at least nine districts including Quetta, Nushki, and Gwadar in late January and early February. The violence has resulted in dozens of casualties and extensive clashes with security forces.

According to reports, the BLA and its affiliates have escalated tactics, targeting state installations to undermine government authority and highlight longstanding grievances over economic marginalisation and political exclusion. This pattern follows earlier violent incidents in the region, such as the 2024 Gwadar Port attack claimed by BLA fighters, which targeted strategic infrastructure tied to China-Pakistan projects.

The turmoil has had broader economic repercussions: mounting insecurity in Balochistan, especially around Gwadar, has contributed to delays and pauses in some Chinese-backed ventures under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Recent reporting indicates that Chinese personnel and ground operations at Gwadar have been suspended temporarily amid security concerns, reflecting Beijing’s caution as the insurgency threatens investor confidence.
