The Kremlin on Monday said that the United States has extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to join Donald Trump’s proposed "Board of Peace" as part of the second phase of his plan aimed at ending the war in Gaza.
Reacting to the proposal, the Kremlin said, "We hope to have contacts with the US to clarify the details of the ‘Board of Peace’ proposal. We are studying its specifics."
The board would be led for life by Trump and initially focus on the Gaza conflict before addressing other disputes, reported international news agency Reuters.
According to the draft charter, the board would be chaired for life by Trump and would start by addressing the Gaza conflict, then be expanded to deal with other conflicts. Invitations have been sent to about 60 countries, including India.
Official responses have varied. Governments reacted cautiously to Trump's invitation to join his 'Board of Peace' initiative aimed at resolving conflicts globally, a plan that diplomats said could harm the work of the United Nations. Some diplomats have expressed concerns about the potential impact on the UN's role in international conflict resolution.
Trump's close ally Hungary offered a clear endorsement of the plan, giving an unequivocal acceptance to the invitation. Other governments, however, have been less forthcoming in their public positions.
Other governments appeared reluctant to make public statements, leaving officials to express concerns anonymously about the impact on the work of the UN. The plan proposes that board members serve three-year terms unless a nation pays $1 billion to fund the board's activities for permanent membership.
Additionally, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will also join the 'Board of Peace' after accepting an invitation, with his spokesperson saying he wants to contribute to a stable Middle East peace.
