Android is coming to your face and Google has not one but three different devices that will be competing with Meta, Apple and more brands.

Google is ready to bring Android to the smart glasses and it showcased the plans at this week’s Android Show which was all about the Android XR platform. Samsung is already confirmed to use the new OS to power its Galaxy XR headset and now Google is reaching out to developers who can make or break the ecosystem and give it the mobile-like filip to compete with the likes of Meta and other wearable brands.

Google doesn’t want to limit its reach in the XR vertical and it can even become the challenger to Apple’s Vision Pro series by offering more affordable options in the market.

Android XR Show: Everything We Saw From Google

Google is not going to stop at the mixed reality headsets and it already has Google Glass-like plans for the wearable segment. The company showed us a teaser of its own XR glasses with a display that can let you see everything and also use AI to analyse or even translate content with its own brain and hardware. Xreal is the brand being entrusted with this product and we could see and hear more about it later next year when the computing power for the glasses are in full shape.

This is where you also have the Project Aura featuring heavily in Google’s plans and what we saw at the I/O 2025 earlier this year could become part of reality in the near future.

Aura is going to have AI smart glasses with displays powered by Gemini and just like the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, Google is going to work with brands like Warby Parker and Gentle Monster for this product.

Google is aiming to have the product ready to launch in 2026 but a clearer timeline will be given later.

The company also intends to work on audio-only AI glasses which will be far more affordable than the display units and have Gemini handle all the heavy work in the background. This means, you can wear the glasses and browse through a cafe’s menu without even stepping inside, or for that matter, make a booking standing right outside a restaurant.

The emergence of AI agents and AI tools is going to make all this work. Google also has a wired glass version in development that is expected to be more powerful than the standalone option.

Developers will be porting their Android apps to work natively on any of these Android XR devices, which means they don’t need to create separate versions.
