In a tragic incident near Sao Paulo, Brazil, a 17-year-old girl named Ana Luiza de Oliveira Neves was poisoned by a cake sent to her home. According to a report from The Mirror, the event unfolded on May 30, when a motorcycle courier delivered a package containing a cake in a glass jar and an anonymous note addressed to Ana Luiza and her sister.
The note, which read “A gift for the most beautiful girl," added a sinister undertone to the surprise delivery.
Ana Luiza consumed the cake, and within an hour, she began experiencing severe symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea. Her father, Silvio Ferreira das Neves, rushed her to the hospital upon returning home on June 1 at 1:30 am.
Doctors diagnosed her with food poisoning and administered medication and IV fluids. Although Ana Luiza felt better and was discharged at 1:30 am on Sunday, she collapsed again in the bathroom at around 4 pm. that same day. She was taken to the emergency room, but suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest en route and displayed signs of cyanosis upon arrival at the hospital. Despite the doctors’ best efforts, she was declared dead.
The police investigation began when Ana Luiza’s sister informed their father about the suspicious cake and note. Authorities traced the sender through the motorcycle courier and identified a 17-year-old girl, who was a friend of Ana Luiza, as the prime suspect.
Initially denying any involvement, the suspect eventually confessed after hours of interrogation. She admitted to purchasing arsenic trioxide online and mixing it into the cake. Disturbingly, the suspect had also attended a sleepover at Ana Luiza’s house and witnessed her friend’s deteriorating condition without reacting.
“She stayed at our house and witnessed everything—Ana falling ill, me taking her to the hospital, and then my daughter collapsing in the bathroom the next day—yet she showed no reaction," the girl’s father said.
Further revelations emerged during the investigation when the suspect confessed to targeting another girl with a poisoned cake on May 15.
She claimed that the reason for her actions was resentment towards this girl, whom she blamed for her breakups with two boyfriends. The first victim fell ill but survived, and the suspect maintained that her intention was only to scare, not to cause harm. The suspect has since been sent to a youth offender institution.
Ana Luiza’s funeral took place on Tuesday, June 3, in Itapecerica da Serra, southwest of Sao Paulo. Her grieving father, Silvio, described her as a quiet girl with few friends, adding that her innocence may have led her to consume the cake without suspecting any danger.
