PM Modi UK Visit LIVE: PM In London; Trade Agreement, Khalistanis On Agenda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday embarked on a visit to the United Kingdom, aiming to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.

He said that India’s ties with the UK have gained “significant momentum” in recent years under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

“Leaving for the UK, a country with which our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has achieved significant momentum in the last few years. I look forward to my talks with PM Keir Starmer and my meeting with His Majesty King Charles III,” Modi said in a post on X after his departure.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday left on a four-day visit to the UK and the Maldives, expressing confidence that this will boost India’s ties with the two countries.

In his departure statement, Modi said India and the United Kingdom share a comprehensive strategic partnership that has witnessed significant progress in recent years.

He noted that the collaboration between the two countries spans a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, technology, innovation, defence, education, research, sustainability, health and people-to-people ties.

Over the years, the India-UK historical ties, have transformed into a robust, multi-faceted, mutually beneficial relationship. The relationship has been elevated to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2021.

New Delhi and London have seen sustained and frequent high-level political engagements.

Prime Minister Modi has met UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer twice over the past one year. They met on the sidelines of G20 Summit in Brazil in November 2024, and again during G7 Summit in June 2025. Both also had multiple telephonic conversations over the period.

Ahead of PM Modi’s two-day visit to the country, former President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed said, “We have always maintained an India First foreign policy in the Maldives.”

“However, during past election cycles, our stance has occasionally swung between a strong pro-China and a strong pro-India alignment. As our democracy matures, our foreign policy is also becoming more stable, consistently recognising the importance of India. Today, across the political spectrum in the Maldives, the approach is firmly India First… Prime Minister Modi’s visit reaffirms India’s strategic importance to its long-standing relationship with the Maldives. We welcome this engagement, as it enhances national stability…” he added.

PM Modi is set to sign the India-UK FTA, which has been under negotiation for three years.
