Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former ISKCON priest, is jailed in Bangladesh on sedition charges. His lawyer seeks to meet Indian leaders, including PM Modi, to highlight the plight of Bangladeshi Hindus.

Rabindra Ghosh is representing Chinmoy Krishna Das in cases against him in Bangladesh.

It’s been three months and counting, but the face of Bangladeshi Hindu resistance – former ISKCON priest, Chinmoy Krishna Das — continues to remain in prison. He was arrested in Bangladesh on November 25, 2024, facing serious allegations like sedition that the international community considers “judicial harassment." But Rabindra Ghosh, who is representing his case, despite huge mental pressure, is in India to receive treatment. However, having seen the judicial process turn into a joke in Bangladesh, particularly in Chinmoy Krishna Das’s case, the 74-year-old wants to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, among other leaders, to ask India to use its influence, if not intervene, in the ongoing case.

Ghosh’s clarity of thought is surprisingly simple — he wants to meet PM Modi, EAM Jaishankar and Home Minister Amit Shah before sitting on the return flight to Dhaka. “I want to meet the Prime Minister of India and make him aware of the pathetic situation the Bangladeshi Hindus are living in every day. I also want to seek an appointment with India’s External Affairs Minister and Union Home Minister. I will meet everyone to save and highlight the plight of the Hindus of Bangladesh," said Ghosh.

While in mid-December, a delegation of Bharatiya Janata Party of the Bengal unit went and met the 74-year-old, the lawyer says, he is scheduled to meet Bengal’s leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari “very soon". Interestingly, he also met TMC leader Kunal Ghosh. During his meeting with Ghosh, Chinmoy Krishna Das’s lawyer is believed to have sought time to meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as well — a request, Ghosh said, he would “communicate at the appropriate level".

Ghosh has been in West Bengal for treatment for a while now. In January, when the matter came for hearing, two of his junior lawyers, along with 18 other legal representatives, handled the case in Bangladesh. But Ghosh is itching to go back to seek bail for Das. He has already met former BJP MP Arjun Singh in Bengal. Singh has promised to convey his “request" at the “right spot". Taking a sharp dig at the extremist elements of Bangladesh, Ghosh said, “They are thinking that I have fled. The truth is I had to take a break for treatment. I won’t leave the ground."

Recently, India’s Security Advisor (NSA), Ajit Doval, who is not a common face in an exhibition, attended an art exhibition featuring the plight of minorities in Bangladesh at Delhi’s Chanakyapuri and stayed back to participate in the panel discussion highlighting India’s deep concern over the plight of minorities in Bangladesh. While Doval was watching photos of minority persecution in Bangladesh exhibited in New Delhi, India’s external affairs Minister S Jaishankar was using strong words like “ridiculous" while talking about Bangladesh’s claims against India and was expressing concerns over state of minorities in the neighbouring country — a more assertive body language of New Delhi and seemingly in coordination.

“There are two aspects to the problem that our bilateral ties are facing – the first being communal attacks on minorities. What is very troubling for India is the spate of attacks on minorities. It is obviously something that impacts our thinking. It is something we have to speak up about, which we have done," Jaishankar said while speaking at a public function.

Irrespective of a hawkish south block, does Ghosh feel threatened to go back? “Look, I am not afraid to go back to my country. I will return. But it is true that I am receiving many threats. All those threats are due to my legal case for Chinmoy Krishna Das," he quipped.
