A passenger plane with nearly 50 people on board went missing in Russia’s far east on Thursday. According to IFAX, the debris of the plane was found in the eastern Amur region, with local reports suggesting that there were no survivors.

Reuters quoted Russian emergency services officials as saying that all on board the plane were feared dead, as per the initial information. However, an official confirmation on the same was awaited.

The aircraft was an An-24 passenger plane and was operated by a Siberia-based airline called Angara.

It was headed for the town of Tynda in the Amur region bordering China.

The burning fuselage of the plane was spotted on the ground by a helicopter, and rescue crews were rushing to the scene.

Reuters quoted the local emergencies ministry as saying that the plane dropped off the radar screens of the air traffic controllers while approaching its destination of Tynda, a town in the Amur region bordering China.

Regional governor Vasily Orlov said that according to preliminary data, there were 43 passengers, including five children, and six crew members on board, Reuters reported.

The plane crashed while attempting a second approach to Tynda airport, AFP quoted Russia’s Far Eastern Transport Prosecutor’s Office as saying.

“While approaching Tynda Airport, the aircraft went around for a second landing, after which contact was lost," it said.

“The circumstances are being investigated," it said.

The state TASS news agency reported that the plane was manufactured almost 50 years ago.

“In 2021, the aircraft’s airworthiness certificate was extended until 2036," it reported, citing a source in aviation services.

The Antonov-24 is a popular, Soviet-designed twin-propeller plane that first entered into service in 1959.

Russia has taken steps to switch from Soviet aircraft to modern jets in recent years, but ageing light aircraft are still widely used in far-flung regions, with accidents frequent.

On Monday, an AeroMexico regional jet nearly collided with a Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 jet on the runway in Mexico City.

The incident happened as the AeroMexico plane was coming in for landing, when it flew over and touched down in front of a Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 jet already beginning to take off.

On July 21, a Bangladesh Air Force F-7 BGI training aircraft crashed into a school campus in northern Dhaka’s Uttara shortly after takeoff.

At least 27 people were reported killed in the incident, while 78 others were injured, local media reported.

Among the deceased were 25 children, many of them under the age of 12, with extensive burn injuries.
