Congressman Kevin Kiley has called on Congress to take action after an illegal biological laboratory was found at a home, which is likely linked to a Chinese citizen who was found accused in Chinese Communist Party (CCP)-linked bio lab in Reedley, California, in 2023.
According to ABC News, the investigation, which began as a code-violation call was later, was later taken over by the Joint Terrorism Task Force when the authorities suspected that illegal medical‑type biological research materials might be stored at the property.
The “potential biological and hazardous materials" were primarily located in a locked garage, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill said during a press briefing on Monday.
He said that the investigators found multiple refrigerators with vials of unknown liquids, unknown liquids in gallon-size containers, a centrifuge and other laboratory equipment.
In one of the refrigerators, “significant volume of material," including vials and storage containers “with liquids of different colors and compositions" was found, he said.
ABC News quoted Chris Delzotto, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Las Vegas office., saying that over 1,000 samples have been collected and sent to an FBI lab for testing. However, details of the kind of tests were not disclosed.
“The scene presented a high level of complexity with materials that have not yet been identified and still require careful assessment," McMahill said, adding that a person, identified as Ori Solomon (55), believed to be the property manager of the house, was arrested on Saturday.
Solomon has been charged with felony disposal/ discharge of hazardous waste in an unauthorized manner and remains in custody, according to court records.
KTNV news cited Clark County records stating that the home was owned by David Destiny Discovery, LLC, registered to a Chinese national, Jia Bei Zhu, who is linked to a 2023 investigation into an alleged illegal biological laboratory in Reedley, California.
Following this, Congressman Kevin Kiley has urged Congress to take action into the matter.
He cited the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party’s report on the 2023 incident stating that the illegal biolab was being run by a PRC citizen who “was a top official at a PRC-state-controlled company and had links to military-civil fusion entities".
“The illegal biolab contained thousands of samples of labeled, unlabeled, and encoded potential pathogens, including HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, and Covid," he cited the report.
“This can’t keep happening," said Congressman Kiley. “The federal government must do more to stop illegal labs from operating in our communities. This bipartisan bill closes loopholes that allow dangerous facilities like these to operate under the radar."
