A mother in China has sparked widespread outrage after it was discovered that she sold her two biological sons to fund tips for live-streaming hosts. Shockingly, she allegedly conceived the second child intending to sell them for this purpose.

The accused, identified as Huang, 26, is originally from Guangxi province in southern China and only has a primary school education.

Huang later moved to Fuzhou, Fujian province, in southeastern China and made a living doing odd jobs.

According to the reports, Huang was an adopted child and, due to her lack of education and care from her adoptive parents, left home at an early age.

In October 2020, she gave birth to her first son, but struggled to care for him due to financial difficulties and the father’s absence. Thus, she decided to sell the baby to escape her predicament.

Her landlord, Wei, discovered her plan and introduced her to a relative, surnamed Li, whose son was struggling with infertility and had long desired to adopt a child. Li’s family bought the baby boy for 45,000 yuan (US$6,300).

As per My News, Huang spent the entire amount tipping livestreaming anchors.

After running out of money, Huang reportedly resorted to even more extreme measures. She actively sought out men for sex, intent on conceiving another child to sell for profit.

Huang gave birth to a second son, Guyu, in 2022 and sold him to a broker for 38,000 yuan ($5,300), who then sold the baby for 103,000 yuan ($14,000). Reportedly, Huang spent all the money on tips for live-streamers, buying clothes and other extravagant items with the proceeds.

Huang was reported to the authorities for suspected fraud on April 13, 2022.

During the police investigation, it was discovered that chat records on her mobile phone related to selling children.

The police rescued both boys in April 2022, and they’ve been cared for by local civil affairs departments while awaiting adoption.

The Fuzhou Jin’an District People’s Court sentenced Huang to five years and two months in prison on July 8, for fraud and trafficking, plus a fine of 30,000 yuan (US$4,000).

Li received a 9-month prison sentence with a 1-year suspension for buying a trafficked child, while Wei was sentenced to 7 months in prison. Human trafficking in China has a long and complex history.

For decades, a human trafficking market has existed, often facilitated by families seeking to adopt children, particularly boys, to continue their family lineage and boost their social status. This case, reported by state media CCTV, has triggered widespread outrage online.

“Is this even real news from the human world? Only five years for abandoning two children? That is way too lenient," one online observer said. Another said, “No sympathy. She should be sentenced to 30 years to reflect her crimes properly."

“She is a monster and is not fit to be a mother," the third one added.
