Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a three-day visit to Australia, met the country’s Leader of Opposition Angus Taylor on Friday and discussed bilateral ties, according to the Ministry of External Affairs. The meeting came as India and Australia expanded cooperation across a range of areas during Modi’s visit.

During the visit, the two countries sealed a series of pacts covering civil nuclear energy, maritime security and critical minerals. Modi also held summit talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, with both leaders underlining the importance of the bilateral partnership in ensuring a peaceful Indo-Pacific.

"They held productive discussions on the growing India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The warm and cordial meeting reflected the strong bipartisan support in Australia for deepening ties with India," Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on X.

A major focus of the summit talks between Modi and Albanese was on significantly stepping up defence ties, especially in the maritime domain. Among the 18 pacts signed after the talks were a joint declaration on defence and security cooperation, a maritime security collaboration roadmap, a joint statement on energy security, and a partnership on cyber, critical technologies and supply chains.

An agreement on civil nuclear energy was also signed to facilitate the commercial supply of uranium from Australia to India for New Delhi’s nuclear power projects, after more than two years of negotiations. In another key decision, India and Australia agreed to work quickly to finalise the proposed Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement and a bilateral investment protection framework to further boost trade and investment ties. Modi also pushed for the early finalisation of the proposed India-Australia Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement, saying it would further accelerate bilateral trade and investment.

The prime minister landed in Australia on July 8 after completing his visit to Indonesia, and is scheduled to leave next for New Zealand, the last leg of his six-day, three-nation tour. He also addressed an Indian diaspora event, ‘Melbourne meets Modi’, which was attended by Albanese. Overall, the visit saw India and Australia widen cooperation in strategic, economic and energy sectors while reaffirming the importance of their partnership.
