Sharing a video from his visit, PM Modi wrote on X,”A memorable welcome in Maldives. Strong ties between our nations will greatly benefit our people.”

Taking to X, PM Modi shared pictures from his X handle and wrote, “Landed in Malé. Deeply touched by the gesture of President Muizzu to come to the airport to welcome me. I am confident that India-Maldives friendship will scale new heights of progress in the times to come.”

Chants of ‘Vande Mataram‘ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ echoed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Maldives for a two-day official visit.

Former President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed said,”The Neighbourhood First policy of India provides vital opportunities for us to align with India’s dynamic economic trajectory. This regional approach has produced tangible outcomes… A formal trade agreement would add structure and predictability, allowing both sides to maximise economic potential. Such agreements could foster cooperation in shipping, logistics, and sustainable marine practices, areas where both nations have common interests.”

“A trade framework would support food security, expand market access, and deepen trust, aligning perfectly with India’s Neighbourhood First vision and the Maldives’ development goals. It would be a win-win.” He also says, “Indian assistance has played a major role during our most challenging times. With our mounting financial difficulties and substantial debt obligations, India’s timely support helped us avoid default and maintain economic stability… Frankly, if not for India, we would have gone defaulter,” he added.

High Commissioner of India to Maldives, G Balasubramanian said that India and Maldives have a very strong relationship, adding that we have been historical neighbours.

“We have been geographical neighbours, and therefore our relationship continued over centuries, I would say. During the Indus Valley civilisation, people from Lothal used to travel to Lhaviyani Atoll and Noonu Atoll in the northern part of the Maldives. People have crossed the seas and maintained relationships, people to people contact, trade and economic ties and everything,” he said.

“In the modern times, they have also continued to invest very much into this relationship. Our Prime Minister has very clearly said that for India, the neighbourhood first policy is something very, very important. The PM has said very clearly that the Maldives occupies a special place. So we have continued to cooperate with the Maldives, and we continue to develop our ties in all areas, whether it is political, developmental assistance, trade and economic relations, people to people contact, cultural, and I would say that we have a very strong relationship,” he added.

Ex-Foreign Minister of Maldives reacted to PM Modi’s visit to the island nation and said that the visit “goes beyond symbolism because recently we have had very unfortunate diplomatic strain between Maldives and India because of the narrative that the current government used during the elections.”

“The hate that was being mongered by the current government accusing our best friend India of such unnecessary things led to this diplomatic strain. It is so important that the PM be here with us as the Guest of Honour during our celebrations of our independence day which is the public recognition by the current administration that what they had been saying and what they had been promoting is not true. So, the Maldivian people are delighted and we are very much looking forward to welcome the PM,” he added.

Maldives capital Malé has been decorated with greeting banners and the Indian flag ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s State Visit to the island nation.

He has been invited by the Maldivian President, Mohamed Muizzu. This will be his third visit to the island nation and the first by any head of state or government during President Muizzu’s tenure.

PM Modi will be the Guest of Honour at the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations on July 26.
