MEA Intervenes After Indian Detained At Newark Airport, Takes Matter Up With US: Sources

The Ministry of External Affairs raised the detention of an Indian national at Newark Airport with the US Embassy. The Indian Embassy and Consulate are seeking details.

The Ministry of External Affairs has formally raised the matter of detention of an Indian national at Newark Airport in New Jersey with the US Embassy in New Delhi, sources said 

“Our Embassy in Washington DC and the Indian Consulate in New York have also been in touch with the US authorities to ascertain the details. We have so far not received any details about the incident or the circumstances under which he was restrained, the flight he had to board or boarded and his final destination. We continue to follow up on the matter," they added.  

The matter came to light after an Indian-American entrepreneur shared a photo of an Indian student who was being deported from Newark Airport. He said the student was crying and was treated like a criminal by the authorities, as he was handcuffed and pinned to the ground.
