West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday visited Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Khagen Murmu in the hospital, a day after he was allegedly attacked by TMC workers while distributing flood relief material in Jalpaiguri’s Nagrakata area.

Murmu sustained grievous injuries when he and BJP MLA Dr Shankar Ghosh were attacked while assisting victims of recent heavy rains, floods, and landslides. BJP leaders have alleged that the attack was orchestrated by members of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and accused the party of “jungle raj".

As the political row intensified over the attack on Murmu, Mamata Banerjee visited the BJP MP in a private hospital in Siliguri, and enquired about his health and well-being, according to the TMC.

“He is diabetic, but there is nothing very serious. I have also spoken to the doctors. He is under observation due to diabetes. I wished him a speedy recovery," she told reporters after meeting Murmu.

“When adversity strikes, humanity must rise above politics. Smt. @MamataOfficial embodies this very ethos. Today, she visited BJP MP Khagen Murmu in the hospital, personally inquiring about his health and well-being. For her, compassion knows no political boundaries, because service to humanity is the truest service to God," the TMC wrote on X.

Several TMC leaders came out in support of Mamata Banerjee’s decision to visit Murmu, commending her for rising above political lines to show compassion. “Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Khagen Murmu. This is Trinamool Congress," wrote senior TMC leader Kunal Ghosh on X.

Ghosh alleged attacks on TMC leaders and workers in the BJP-led Tripura and stressed that Mamata Banerjee stood for non-violence and peace. “The BJP is responsible for the people’s anger. But Trinamool does not support physical attacks as an expression of anger. It condemns them. We wish for Khagenbabu’s recovery. Alongside, a question: Have you forgotten the attacks by BJP on Trinamool leaders and workers in Tripura? And the repeated attacks on Mamata-di during the CPM era? Even so, this picture proves that Trinamool is different. Mamata-di stands for non-violence and peace."

TMC spokesperson Debangshu Bhattacharya Dev pointed out that no BJP leader visited Mamata Banerjee when she suffered a broken leg in Nandigram ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections.

“Mamata Bandyopadhyay visited BJP MP Khagen Murmu in hospital. When Mamata Banerjee’s leg was broken in Nandigram, BJP leaders — big, small, and in-between — mocked it as drama. Only this daughter of Bengal has the strength to repay all insults with affection," he said on Facebook.

BJP Vs TMC

Meanwhile, the BJP and TMC continued to trade barbs over the attack, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condemning the incident and the “pathetic law and order situation" in West Bengal.

“The manner in which our Party colleagues, including a sitting MP and MLA, were attacked in West Bengal for serving the people affected by floods and landslides is outright appalling. It highlights the insensitivity of the TMC as well as the absolutely pathetic law and order situation in the state," said PM Modi on X on Monday.

In response, Mamata Banerjee accused PM Modi of politicising the “natural disaster" in North Bengal, saying it was “unfortunate and deeply concerning" that he chose to make allegations against the state government without waiting for a proper investigation.

“The Prime Minister has blamed the TMC and the West Bengal Government outright without a shred of verified evidence, legal inquiry, or administrative report. This is not just a political low, it is a breach of the constitutional ethos the Prime Minister has sworn to uphold," she wrote.

Reiterating that violence must be condemned “unequivocally," the Chief Minister urged restraint and unity, saying this was “not the time for partisan chest-thumping."
