India on Thursday issued a strong rebuttal to Pakistan at the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), asserting that Jammu and Kashmir’s development stands in sharp contrast to Pakistan’s economic challenges. During the high-level segment on February 25, India said the Union Territory’s development budget is “more than double the recent bailout package" sought by Pakistan from the Monetary Fund (IMF).

Speaking at the session being held from February 23 to March 31, Anupama Singh, India’s representative, rejected allegations made by Pakistan and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), accusing the grouping of acting as an “echo chamber" for one member state.

“We categorically reject these allegations," Singh said, adding that Pakistan’s “incessant propaganda now reeks of envy."

Reiterating India’s position, she said Jammu and Kashmir “was, is, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India," describing its accession in 1947 as “completely legal and irrevocable" under the Indian Independence Act and international law. She added that the only outstanding issue was Pakistan’s “illegal occupation of Indian territories" and called on Islamabad to vacate them.

Referring to infrastructure progress, Singh cited the inauguration of the Chenab Rail Bridge, calling it the world’s highest railway bridge. “If the Chenab Rail Bridge… is fake, then Pakistan must be hallucinating or living in the ‘La-la-land’," she remarked.

She also dismissed criticism on democratic processes, saying it was “hard to take lectures on democracy from a country where civilian governments rarely complete their terms." Accusing Pakistan of “relentless state-sponsored terrorism," Singh said Jammu and Kashmir continues to advance politically, economically and socially, adding that “the world can certainly see through its charade."
