The Israeli army on Friday issued an evacuation order for residents of parts of Gaza City ahead of a planned attack deep inside the battered Palestinian territory.

The evacuation order coincides with the start of Eid al-Adha, one of the most significant religious festivals in the Muslim calendar.

“This is a final and urgent warning ahead of an impending strike," army spokesman Avichay Adraee said, adding that the Israeli military will “strike all areas from which rockets are launched."

The evacuation warning has reportedly been issued for Blocks 608, 609, 615, and 616 in northern Gaza. According to reports, these areas were allegedly used to launch rockets and missiles toward Israel.

With the new warning, around 80 per cent of the Gaza Strip has come under some form of forced displacement order, severely limiting the options for Palestinians seeking refuge.

Israel Intensifies Gaza Campaign

The Israeli military has intensified its operations in Gaza, describing it as a renewed offensive aimed at dismantling Hamas, following the group’s attack in October 2023 that triggered the ongoing conflict.

Calls from the international community for a negotiated ceasefire have gained momentum in recent weeks.

On Thursday, Hamas’s senior negotiator Khalil al-Hayya expressed the group’s willingness to re-engage in talks to secure a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

Previous negotiations have failed to make headway since the collapse of a brief truce in March, which ended when Israel resumed its military campaign.

Although both sides appeared close to an agreement late last month, the deal fell through amid mutual accusations over the failure of a US-mediated proposal.

Israel is also under increasing international pressure to improve humanitarian access to Gaza. A blockade lasting over two months severely restricted the flow of essential supplies, resulting in acute shortages of food and other necessities.

In response, Israel has partially lifted the blockade and is cooperating with the US-supported Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) to facilitate aid delivery through a limited number of distribution centres in southern and central Gaza.

However, the GHF has drawn sharp criticism from the UN and humanitarian agencies, especially following a series of deadly incidents near its facilities.

According to figures compiled by AFP from official sources, Hamas’s October assault on Israel claimed the lives of 1,218 people, most of whom were civilians.

According to the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, at least 4,402 people have been killed since Israel resumed its offensive on March 18, bringing the total death toll in the conflict to 54,677—most of them civilians.
