Apple continues to rely on its rivals to make its iPhones and the 2026 series could use Samsung's help.

Apple and Samsung could put their rivalry to one side

iPhone18 series is getting a big overhaul from Apple next year but one of the main changes could be linked to its cameras. Reports from South Korea suggest the iPhone 18 models are likely to get US-made camera sensors from one of its biggest rivals, Samsung. 

The Elec has mentioned that Apple has relied on Sony for its sensors for many years but is about to change that strategy and go with something more locally produced by the tech giant. Samsung is tipped to use its plant in Austin, US to manufacture the high-end sensors that Apple could deploy for the 2026 iPhone 18 models. 

Samsung’s Big Camera Push For iPhone 18 

The report says Samsung is hiring mechanical project managers for the Austin plant where they will be handling the main clients like Apple. The iPhone 18 series is tipped to come with major upgrades, at least on the Pro versions, and most likely with the iPhone Fold model that many expect to be announced in 2026 from the company. 

Sony is losing its status as the default camera supplier for Apple and in some ways, this is a big win for Samsung, which looks beyond its own mobile business to increase the components available in the market. While this goes on, the South Korean brand is rumoured to be making another foldable device which is going to compete with Apple’s first iPhone foldable. 

The details offered by ETNews in its report claims Samsung is working on a wider foldable product which will be launching close on the heels of the iPhone Fold debut later next year. 

It says the model will feature a 7.6-inch inner screen along with a smaller 5.4-inch cover display. The wider profile means you have a passport-like design with 4:3 aspect ratio. 

The cover-like profile is mostly going to cater to the audience that will be eyeing the iPhone foldable. But Samsung has shown its prowess with a Galaxy Fold 7 that ticked most of the boxes, including the compact design and flagship features. The Apple foldable is widely awaited but could Samsung steal its thunder again?
