Android phones are still waiting for their Face ID era and Google could finally have the answer with the new feature.

Pixel phones are once again likely to get Face ID tech for better safety
Google is working on a new security feature for Android phones which could finally become its answer to Apple’s Face ID. The company is reportedly building the new technology codenamed Project Toscana that is said to effectively perform even in low light conditions.
The details about the new option have been mentioned by Android Authority in its report. Google could have the older under-display infrared (IR) camera back for the Pixel 11 series. This would provide a more secure and adaptable face unlock function than the existing face authentication system based on standard front-facing colour cameras.
Android Getting Face ID Finally?
The report also suggests Google could integrate the new feature into its future Chromebook models, giving users better security for their devices. Using infrared sensors will not only deliver better results and accuracy but also do the unlocking safer than any face unlock options available on Android.
The camera sensor will reportedly be powered by Google’s Tensor G6 chipset (on the Pixel) and the image signal processor (ISP) of the chip will have a new “lite" front end designed specifically for this purpose.
However, while the Pixel 4 required a large top bezel to accommodate the technology, the Pixel 11, on the other hand, will insert the IR camera beneath the panel, taking up no extra space.
The 2019 Pixel featured two infrared cameras for facial recognition that work even in the dark, however, these were removed in subsequent Pixel versions.
Since the Pixel 7 series, all Pixel phones have used a facial authentication mechanism based on the standard front-facing colour camera. Google could change the dynamics of the Android arena with the new face ID option built into the Pixel 11 series. To be fair, most security experts advocate for fingerprint biometric security, but Apple’s Face ID has shown its value for many years and Google could bring it to more users soon.
Apple is also expected to introduce the under-display IR cameras for its Face ID tech later this year with the iPhone 18 Pro series.
