Initial pre-bookings for Apple’s iPhone 17 series in India have surpassed last year’s iPhone 16 launch, setting the stage for one of Apple’s strongest Diwali quarters yet, despite supply constraints for the Pro models, according to a report by Moneycontrol, citing IDC data.

Shipments are expected to cross 5 million units in the July–September quarter of 2025, with the iPhone 17 lineup contributing 15–20% of sales, compared with about 10% from the iPhone 16 series during the same period last year. Apple shipped around 4 million iPhones in Q3 2024.

“Pre-orders for iPhone 17 are outpacing those of iPhone 16 during the same launch window, and this momentum should sustain through the Diwali quarter. Demand for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max has been especially strong, raising the possibility of early supply shortages," Upasana Joshi, analyst at IDC, told Moneycontrol.

The iPhone 17 series will go on sale in India on September 19, 2025, starting at Rs 82,900 for the iPhone 17 (256GB). The iPhone Air, a slimmer model, begins at Rs 1,19,900, while the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max (256GB) are priced at Rs 1,34,900 and Rs 1,49,900, respectively.

Analysts noted that Apple’s new storage upgrades, aggressive bank offers, and affordability schemes are spurring demand. “The base variant is now 256GB, making it better value than last year. Pro and Pro Max models are seeing the highest demand, with cosmic orange emerging as a popular choice," Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint, told Moneycontrol.

With two new Apple stores opening this year, bringing the total to four, analysts expect these locations to receive priority stock allocations, likely leading to longer queues and tighter availability at third-party retailers. Retailers told Moneycontrol that in a typical 500-unit shipment, only 50 are Pro units and as few as 10 are Pro Max, with shortages particularly acute in higher-capacity variants like 512GB and 1TB.

Foxconn and Tata’s Pegatron unit are assembling the iPhone 17 Pro in India, while Wistron and Foxconn plants are producing the base iPhone 17 and iPhone Air. Analysts said production is initially skewed toward base models, with Pro models ramping up weeks later based on global demand.

Retailers noted that black-market prices for the Pro and Pro Max are already increasing by 10–20% ahead of launch week, reflecting strong demand and limited supply.
