A man and woman were publicly flogged 100 times each in Indonesia’s Aceh province after being found guilty of engaging in sexual relations outside marriage- a crime under the province’s Islamic Sharia law.

The punishment was carried out in front of a crowd at a park in Banda Aceh, the provincial capital. The pair were lashed in sets of 10 with a rattan cane, while the female convict was whipped by a woman officer, in accordance with religious protocols, AFP reported.

Local authorities also caned three other individuals a total of 49 times for offences related to gambling and alcohol use.

“Today we are carrying out flogging punishments for perpetrators of adultery, alcohol consumption, and online gambling," Banda Aceh Mayor Illiza Sa’aduddin Djamal said, adding, “This becomes a moral lesson for the community. The flogging becomes a gateway to repentance."

Medical teams were stationed nearby to monitor the health of those being punished, reports claimed.

Sharia Law In Aceh

Aceh is the only region in Indonesia where Sharia law is enforced, allowing public corporal punishment for offences such as adultery, gambling, and alcohol consumption. While Indonesia passed a nationwide ban on sex outside of marriage in 2022, it is not set to take effect until 2025.

Despite repeated criticism from human rights organisations who describe the practice as degrading and inhumane, public flogging remains widely supported in Aceh. Similar punishments have been handed down in the past. In February, two men were flogged more than 150 times after being found guilty of engaging in same-sex relations.
