An Indian man working as a truck driver in Canada has been found dead in Hamilton, with police treating the case as a homicide. The circumstances surrounding the death of 29-year-old Taranpreet Singh Sidhu remain under investigation, according to media reports.
Sidhu, who had moved to Canada from India in 2022, was found dead on Wednesday in a culvert in the Stoney Creek community of Hamilton, around 500 km southeast of Ottawa. Police have said they are confident he “was not killed in the area where he was found” and are working closely with Peel Regional Police in the investigation.
A CBC News report on Friday, quoting a Hamilton police news release, said Sidhu was living in Brampton and had also lived in Halifax. Investigators have carried out a video canvass in the area where his body was found and are interviewing witnesses.
CP24 reported on Thursday that police officer Robert Dillani told reporters at a news conference that a civilian found Sidhu on some rocks, partially submerged in shallow water. After an autopsy on Thursday, investigators said they suspect Sidhu was murdered, though the exact cause of death has not been released as the investigation is ongoing.
Quoting a police release, CBC News said, “While detectives continue to pursue all investigative avenues, they are not prepared to release information regarding the vehicle believed to have been used to transport Mr Sidhu.” Police have asked anyone who had contact with Sidhu in the period leading up to his death to get in touch with investigators. The case remains under investigation as police continue to piece together the events leading to Sidhu’s death.
