Indian Embassy officials in Beijing have met representatives of China’s state-run Xinhua news agency as the two countries continue efforts to normalise relations after the 2020 Eastern Ladakh conflict.
The meeting was held between Shweta Singh, Minister at the Embassy, and Wang Jianxin, Deputy Director-General of the Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Department of Xinhua. Indian officials described it as part of efforts to step up engagement with Chinese media.
In a post on X on Sunday, along with a photograph, the Indian Embassy said: "On 24 June 2026, Embassy officials met representatives of Xinhua News Agency at its headquarters in Beijing and exchanged views on issues of mutual interest." The embassy did not provide further details.
India and China are in the process of restoring ties after relations were frozen by the Eastern Ladakh conflict in 2020. At present, the two sides have resumed the Kailash-Manasarovar Yatra, visas and flights.
China has also been calling for the restoration of visas for its journalists. During his meeting with Security Adviser Ajit Doval in New Delhi last week, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for both countries to promote exchanges in various fields, including the media. Wang was in New Delhi to attend the BRICS NSA meeting.
In April 2023, China froze the visas of two Beijing-based Indian journalists while they were on leave in India, alleging that Chinese journalists were not being given visas. Later, Beijing also declined to renew the visa of another Indian journalist, while allowing the PTI bureau to continue operating.
More recently, China issued a Journalist visa to The Hindu correspondent to work from Beijing. The latest meeting between the Indian Embassy and Xinhua comes amid these broader efforts by both sides to restore engagement, including in the media sector.
