India, Uzbekistan elevate ties; uranium supply framework on agenda

India and Uzbekistan on Sunday decided to elevate their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying the two countries are also working on a framework for the long-term supply of uranium. Modi made the remarks during bilateral talks with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Modi arrived in Uzbekistan on Saturday on a two-day visit aimed at strengthening ties in areas such as trade, clean energy and connectivity. New Delhi has been looking at procuring uranium from Uzbekistan for producing nuclear energy for civilian use.

In his opening remarks at the talks, Modi said, "We are celebrating the 15th anniversary of our strategic partnership. I am delighted that, on this special occasion, we are elevating our ties to the level of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership." He added, "We will move forward by setting concrete goals within this framework," speaking in Hindi.

The prime minister also referred to his meeting with Mirziyoyev over dinner on Saturday night. "We had a productive discussion over dinner last night and took several important decisions," he said. Modi said the two sides would set up a Coordination Council at the level of foreign ministers to guide all aspects of bilateral cooperation through close coordination. He also said both countries would raise their existing joint commission from the secretary level to the ministerial level and jointly organise a business summit involving business leaders from both nations.

Modi said the two countries would also deepen cooperation in the energy sector. "We will also establish a long-term arrangement for the supply of uranium," he said, as both sides moved to broaden ties under the new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
