Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday invited Russian President Vladimir Putin for an official state visit, joking that India shouldn’t be the only country he travels to.
The two leaders met in Moscow, the second time they have met this year in Russia. Prabowo hailed the “excellent" state of relations and invited the Russian leader to come to Indonesia “at your convenience" by 2026 or 2027, referring to Putin’s recent visit to India.
“Using this opportunity, I would like to invite you to visit Indonesia at your convenience. Maybe it could happen in 2026 or 2027. We would be very happy to receive you in our country. Because, India should not be the only country where you travel," he said, drawing laughter from Putin.
These remarks followed Putin’s high-profile visit to India, where he held wide‑ranging talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Russian President sent a strong message of India-Russia friendship on the global stage, coming at a crucial meeting when US President Donald Trump imposed India with massive 50% tariff on buying Russian oil.
Prime Minister Modi personally welcomed Putin at Palam airport, accompanied by a full ceremonial guard of honour and a red-carpet reception. The discussions covered defence cooperation, energy ties, trade expansion, and ongoing geopolitical challenges. The visit was seen as a reaffirmation of the long‑standing India–Russia partnership at a time of shifting global alignments.
During his talks with Modi, Putin said he was ready to continue “uninterrupted shipments" of fuel to India amid US pressure. However, India has not commented on his offer.
Meanwhile, Russia is seeking to diversify wheat exports to Asia from its traditional customers in the Middle East amid US competition. Prabowo has maintained Indonesia’s non-aligned foreign policy, vowing to befriend any country, including Russia and the United States. Russia has lauded Indonesia’s “balanced" position on the war, according to Reuters.
