External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Monday arrived in China for the first time since ties between the two countries strained after the 2020 military standoff along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.

He will participate in a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) foreign ministers on July 14 and 15 in Tianjin.

In his first meeting with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng shortly after landing in Beijing, Jaishankar recalled the October 2024 meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping and said that bilateral relations have improved since then. He expressed confidence that his visit to China will “maintain that positive trajectory".

He highlighted that the international situation at present “is very complex" and called for an “open exchange of views" between the two neighbours.

“Our bilateral relationship, as you have pointed, has been steadily improving since the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping in Kazan last October. I am confident that my discussions in this visit will maintain that positive trajectory," Jaishankar told Zheng.

The EAM further appreciated the resumption of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which was halted since 2020 due to the pandemic and subsequent India-China border tensions, and said that continued normalisation of ties “can produce mutually beneficial outcomes".

“The international situation, as we meet today, is very complex. As neighbouring nations and major economies, an open exchange of views and perspectives between India and China is very important," he noted.
