Elon Musk on Thursday warned that the United States would cease to be the same country if the “radical left" were to win upcoming elections, as reports emerged that the billionaire is backing Republican candidates ahead of the 2026 midterms.

“America is toast if the radical left wins," Musk wrote on X. “They will open the floodgates to illegal immigration and fraud. Won’t be America anymore."

Musk’s post echoed claims by conservative commentators that he was “going all-in" on funding Republicans in the current cycle. While Musk has not detailed his political spending publicly, allies of both Trump and Musk told Axios in December that they expect him to operate as a conventional Republican mega-donor rather than mount a challenge against the party.

The post came amid reporting by the news agency that Musk has begun funding Republican House and Senate campaigns for the 2026 midterm elections, signalling a thaw in his once-strained relationship with President Donald Trump.

According to the report, Musk has recently cut large cheques to support GOP congressional races and has indicated he will continue donating through the 2026 cycle. While the amounts will only be disclosed when campaign finance filings are released next month, the Axios report said that his backing could provide a major boost to Republicans seeking to retain control of Congress.

Musk was the single largest donor in the 2024 election cycle, contributing $291.5 million, most of it in support of Trump’s re-election bid.

His renewed political engagement follows months of tension with Trump after Musk exited the administration in May.

The fallout included sharp public criticism from Musk over Trump’s flagship spending bill and the withdrawal of a NASA nomination linked to one of Musk’s allies. Musk had even threatened to form a third political party to challenge Republican incumbents.

Relations have since improved. The news outlet reported that Musk dined last month with Vice President JD Vance, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and senior Trump aides, with Vance playing a key role in arranging the meeting. Trump and Musk have also spoken intermittently, and Musk attended a recent White House dinner hosted for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
