Social media star Tanner Martin from Utah has died at the age of 30 after a five-year battle with stage four colon cancer. The news of his death was shared by his wife Shay Wright through a pre-recorded video on Instagram, which Martin had prepared before his passing.
The emotional video, posted on Wednesday, showed Martin addressing the camera directly about his own death. He died just 41 days after the birth of his daughter, AmyLou.
In the video, Martin appears frail but upbeat as he addresses viewers directly, “Hey, it’s me, Tanner. If you are watching this, I am dead."
Lasting a little over five minutes, in his final message, he reflected on his life and expressed love for his family and followers.
“I had a heck of a life. I decided to make this video announcing my death because I saw someone did that, like, a year or so ago, and I think it’s a good opportunity to get all your thoughts out," he explained.
“But you guys, life was awesome. I really enjoyed it while I was here. Hopefully, I believe there’s something after this. I’m excited to meet those people, and hopefully we’re hanging out now and making fun of all you nerds," Martin added.
In the follow-up clip, Martin is seen holding his newborn daughter as he asked the viewers to support her future through a GoFundMe campaign, jokingly saying “for the price of a McChicken you could fund my AmyLou’s legacy fund."
Who was Tanner Martin?
Tanner Martin was a former call centre worker who gained a large online following by openly documenting his cancer journey. After being diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer five years ago, Martin used social media to share the highs and lows of treatment, recovery, and eventually, becoming a father.
In 2023, when his treatment seemed to be working, he and Shay decided to start a family. They welcomed their daughter on 15 May this. Sadly, shortly after her birth, his health rapidly declined.
Despite physical suffering, Martin’s honesty, humour, and courage touched many people around the world. He remained hopeful, funny, and inspiring till the end.
After months of treatment that at times seemed promising, Martin and Wright celebrated the birth of AmyLou on 15 May. Their joy, however, was short‑lived; the cancer recurred shortly after, and Martin’s health declined rapidly.
