Maulana Fazlur Rehman criticizes Pakistan Army's cross-border strikes on Afghanistan, drawing parallels to India's Operation Sindoor and urging policy rethink.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman has been a consistent critic of Pakistan’s Afghanistan policy.
A senior Pakistani politician questioned the logic of Islamabad’s military posture on cross-border strikes, drawing a direct comparison between Pakistan’s actions against Afghanistan and India’s Operation Sindoor. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman criticised the Pakistan Army, led by Asim Munir, for carrying out strikes inside Afghanistan that have resulted in civilian casualties. He said Islamabad could not justify such actions while objecting to India’s cross-border operations against terror infrastructure.
“If you say that we attacked our enemy in Afghanistan and justify this, then India can also say that it attacked Bahawalpur, Muridke and the headquarters of groups responsible for attacks in Kashmir," Maulana Fazlur Rehman said.
He continued, “Then how can you raise objections? The same accusations are now being levelled against Pakistan by Afghanistan. How do you justify both positions?"

Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s remarks referenced Operation Sindoor, India’s pre-dawn missile strikes on May 7 targeting nine terror facilities in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, including the Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold in Bahawalpur and Lashkar-e-Taiba’s base in Muridke. The operation was launched in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir in which 26 civilians were killed by terrorists linked to a Lashkar-e-Taiba offshoot.
Pakistan- Afghanistan Border Clashes
Pakistan and Afghanistan have been locked in a deepening dispute since the Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021, with Islamabad accusing Afghan authorities of sheltering terrorists- an allegation the Afghan side denies. India has also condemned Pakistan’s recent military actions against Afghanistan.
“We have seen reports of border clashes in which several Afghan civilians have been killed. We condemn such attacks on innocent Afghan people," Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman has been a long-time critic of Pakistan’s Afghanistan policy and has previously offered to mediate between the two sides during periods of heightened tension.
