Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday took a sharp jibe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, saying that the grand old party’s repeated electoral losses were the result of its failure to understand public sentiment and the politics of development.

While addressing an event in Ahmedabad, the Union Minister referred to Rahul Gandhi’s recent remarks in Parliament questioning why the Congress continues to lose elections. Shah said that the outcome of public programmes and election results clearly explained the party’s declining electoral fortunes.

Shah said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had earned repeated mandates through what he described as trust-based, development-oriented and sensitive governance. In contrast, he claimed the Congress remained disconnected from issues that enjoy wide public support, news agency ANI reported.

Citing his own electoral experience, Shah said he had been repeatedly elected from areas such as Vanzar without facing major agitations, obstructions or public protests, which he said reflected people’s trust in the BJP’s governance model.

Listing major policy decisions, Shah said the Congress had opposed several moves that enjoyed popular support, including the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, air strikes against Pakistan, action against alleged Bangladeshi infiltrators, the abrogation of Article 370 and temple construction in Kashi.

“When you oppose everything that the people support, where will the votes come from?" Shah asked.

Shah accused Rahul Gandhi of focusing on issues such as FIRs instead of addressing people’s real concerns. “Instead of understanding governance and public issues, Rahul Gandhi is busy understanding FIRs, which is not even his responsibility," he said.

Shah said that even Rahul Gandhi’s own party leaders fail to make him understand ground realities, adding that the BJP’s development-oriented politics and sensitive governance model continues to resonate strongly with the public.

Taking a political swipe, Shah asserted that the Congress would continue to lose elections in states such as West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. He also expressed confidence that the BJP would return to power again in 2029 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
