A Norwegian court on Friday sentenced a gynaecologist to 21 years in prison after finding him guilty of committing 70 rapes and sexual assaults during medical examinations spanning nearly 20 years.
According to the verdict, the assaults took place between 2004 and 2022 at the clinic of the accused, Arne Bye, in Frosta, a town in central Norway.
The court also found him guilty of 80 counts of abusing his professional position, barring him from practising medicine permanently and ordering him to pay financial compensation to his victims.
The case, tried in the Trøndelag district court, involved testimony from 94 women who described repeated incidents of non-consensual touching and digital penetration carried out without medical justification — acts that fall under the legal definition of rape in Norway.
Prosecutors revealed that Bye also filmed the assaults.
“The suspect’s actions make this case an extremely serious one. The actions are unacceptable," Judge Espen Haug said in court, as quoted by Adresseavisen newspaper.
The sentence aligned with what prosecutors had requested.
Bye’s defence team, however, acknowledged only 20 instances of rape and had sought a more lenient sentence.
