The updates included Sri Lanka easing the return of refugees from India, the US moving towards mandatory online filing for immigration benefits, fresh statements from Pakistan on Imran Khan and judicial appointments, a US court decision in the Adani case, a report on China’s aircraft carriers, flood warnings in Beijing and Russian attacks in Ukraine.
Sri Lanka’s government approved special immigration arrangements to help the voluntary return of refugees in India who left the island nation without valid travel documents during its decades-long civil war, according to a cabinet note issued in Colombo.
In the US, immigration authorities are set to make online applications mandatory for benefits such as green cards, citizenship and asylum, among others, in a move aimed at improving efficiency and reducing operational costs.
In Pakistan, a senior leader of former prime minister Imran Khan’s party said there was a ‘spark of revolution’ among the country’s youth over Khan’s continued imprisonment. The leader also warned that public anger could rise to a point where even Khan’s call for reconciliation may fail to restore peace.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari approved the appointment of 19 additional judges to five high courts and confirmed five others as permanent judges, ending a weeks-long deadlock between the president’s office and the federal government over judicial appointments.
In the Adani case, a US federal judge permanently dismissed the criminal securities-fraud case against Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar, bringing nearly two years of prosecution to a close without a trial. Gautam Adani said ‘truth has prevailed’.
A US think tank report said China is expanding its aircraft carrier fleet rapidly to strengthen its global naval presence, but added that the large warships may remain vulnerable to submarine attacks.
Beijing stepped up its flood-control response after authorities issued red rainstorm alerts in several districts of the Chinese capital and warned of heavy downpours, with higher risks of urban waterlogging and landslides.
