Former US President Barack Obama on Wednesday congratulated Democratic candidates on their victories, describing the results as a reflection of unity and forward-looking leadership.
“Congratulations to all the Democratic candidates who won tonight. It’s a reminder that when we come together around strong, forward-looking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win," Obama wrote on X. He added, “We’ve still got plenty of work to do, but the future looks a little bit brighter."

The wins came as Democrats secured key victories across states and cities, highlighting momentum ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The results marked several historic firsts and critical defences of power for the party.
In New York City, Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani claimed victory in the mayoral race, marking a major win for progressives. The 34-year-old’s triumph represents “a victory for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party" at a time when national Democrats remain divided over how to counter President Donald Trump, who “had threatened to pull federal funds from the city if Mamdani was elected," CNN reported.
His success highlights the party’s growing unity around progressive leadership in key urban centres.
Virginia delivered a series of historic Democratic victories. Abigail Spanberger made history by becoming the first woman to be elected governor after defeating Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, while Ghazala Hashmi will become “the nation’s first Muslim woman elected to state-wide office" as lieutenant governor, according to CNN.
Democrat Jay Jones also won the attorney general’s race, defeating incumbent Republican Jason Miyares despite the controversy surrounding “violent text messages," CNN noted. Together, these wins underscore the Democrats’ expanding influence in statewide offices.
In New Jersey, Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill captured the governor’s seat after defeating Republican Jack Ciattarelli.
Meanwhile, Democrats strengthened their hold on local governments — Corey O’Connor is set to take office as mayor of Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati’s incumbent Democrat Aftab Pureval secured reelection by defeating Vice President JD Vance’s half-brother, CNN said.
Pennsylvania Democrats also held onto their liberal majority on the state Supreme Court, successfully blocking Republican efforts to shift the balance of power ahead of the next presidential election.
