The CIA has issued a rare Farsi-language message on social media for Iranians wishing to securely contact the agency. The move comes amid a massive buildup of US military forces in the Middle East as President Donald Trump has threatened action against Iran if nuclear talks fail.
The message was shared on the CIA’s official accounts on X, Instagram, Facebook, Telegram and YouTube. It included a video and instructions on how to safely establish contact with the agency.
The English translation of the message read, “Hello. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) can hear your voice and wants to help you. Below is the necessary guidance on how to securely contact us virtually."
The CIA urged potential contacts to take precautions to protect themselves. Individuals were advised not to use work computers or personal phones, to use a new disposable device if possible, and to be aware of their surroundings.
The message also recommended using a trusted Virtual Private Network (VPN) outside Russia, Iran or China, or the Tor Network, which encrypts data and hides the user’s IP address. Contacts were asked to provide information such as locations, job titles and any skills of interest to the agency.
This Farsi message is the latest in a series of CIA efforts to recruit sources in Iran, China, North Korea and Russia. The agency declined to comment, and Iran’s delegation to the United Nations did not immediately respond.
Trump outlined the case for possible US military action in his State of the Union speech on Tuesday, saying he would not allow Iran, which he called the world’s largest sponsor of terrorism, to develop a nuclear weapon.
Iran denies seeking a nuclear arsenal. US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to meet Iranian officials in Geneva on Thursday for a new round of nuclear negotiations.
