Without directly naming the US, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday warned against “unilateral and bullying acts,” amid the Trump administration's move to attack and capture Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife.

In remarks during his meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin, Xi urged "to respect the development paths chosen by the peoples of other nations, and abide by international law, as well as the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, with major countries taking the lead in doing so," TRT News reported citing China's Xinhua news agency.

Echoing the President's remarks, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian reiterated his opposition to what it described as "bullying acts" that violate another country’s sovereignty.

Addressing a press conference, Lin said Beijing has called for Maduro’s immediate release and reiterated its opposition to the use of force in international relations.

He warned that US actions threaten peace and stability in Latin America and reaffirmed China’s long-standing policy of non-interference.

China, Lin added, maintains positive communication and cooperation with the Venezuelan government and remains willing to support Latin American countries on issues of sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

Emphasising that China’s policy towards the region is consistent and stable, he said Beijing would remain a “good friend” to Latin American nations regardless of changes in the international situation.

China also expressed support for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the US actions.

The Foreign Ministry spokesperson's comments come a day after Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing cannot accept any country acting as the "world's judge."

"We have never believed that any country can act as the world's police, nor do we accept that any nation can claim to be the world's judge," Wang told his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar during a meeting in Beijing on Sunday, referring to "sudden developments in Venezuela" without directly mentioning the US.
