OpenAI continues to experiment with new ChatGPT features and the latest is called group chats. Yes, the AI chatbot is building tools to help you collaborate with other people. You invite friends or family and use ChatGPT for the regular stuff or something beyond that. OpenAI isn’t the first tech giant to have this integrated within its AI chatbot, with Meta already having the control over WhatsApp and other social media apps. 

Anthropic also has support for group work in Claude. We’ve already seen ChatGPT bring daily posts that are offered during the start of the day, and now group chats are also making their way albeit in a limited capacity. 

Group Chats In ChatGPT: How It Works

Any ChatGPT user can create a group chat and invite other people. You just need an account with ChatGPT to access the feature or create the URL for the group. OpenAI lets you have up to 20 users in a group which is a decent number. The company will ask the user to share their profile name as well as a picture for the group and all these chats will be available on the side panel under a new section. 

The unique part about this chat option is that ChatGPT will be an intrinsic part of the conversation, either when you manually trigger it by tagging or the AI will understand the nature of the chat and respond accordingly. The big difference will come in the responses from ChatGPT as one person could be using the Pro version while the other has the free tier of the AI chatbot. The user creating the group can remove others from it and the AI chatbot can react with emojis to your messages. 

The ChatGPT version in group chats is the GPT 5.1 Auto which goes for the best available AI model supported in the plan for the user. 

ChatGPT 5.1 is publicly available, and the company says it will prove to be a lot smarter and more conversational than the previous GPT 5 version. 

OpenAI claims GPT 5.1 has been developed after hearing the feedback from users, who have demanded a more pleasant version of GPT that can be fun to talk to. OpenAI says GPT 5.1 will offer improvements across the board, both with its intelligence as well as how it communicates with the users.
