Shukla, an accomplished Indian Air Force officer and a key astronaut selected under ISRO’s Gaganyaan program, has become the second Indian to fly into space, and the first ever to reach the ISS, following Rakesh Sharma’s landmark mission in 1984 aboard a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft.

His participation comes as part of the Axiom-4 mission, a privately funded international spaceflight organized by Axiom Space, in collaboration with NASA and SpaceX.

The mission is a precursor to India’s own human spaceflight ambitions under Gaganyaan, expected to launch in the coming years. This commercial mission features an international crew, reflecting growing global collaboration in space exploration. For India, this mission not only symbolises a return to crewed spaceflight but also enhances its footprint in the rapidly expanding commercial space sector.
