A British lawmaker has suggested that football teams should boycott the upcoming World Cup in North America in response to US President Donald Trump’s actions over Greenland.

During a debate on Arctic security on Monday, Conservative MP Simon Hoare accused Trump of disrespecting his allies and said, “Trump is thin-skinned, he has an ego and he doesn’t like to be embarrassed."

“Should the state visit (by King Charles to the US) go ahead this year? Should football teams play in American stadiums for the World Cup? These are things that would embarrass the President at home. We now need to fight fire with fire," he added.

Adding to Simon’s remarks, Liberal Democrat MP Luke Taylor echoed similar sentiments and said that the UK is not dealing with a rational man. “I want to agree with the honorable member for North Dorset (Hoare) and ask the government if they will consider removing the King’s visit to the US and also a boycott of the World Cup to show Donald Trump that the only thing he responds to is his own pride," he said.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper responded to such suggestions by saying the UK would continue to pursue diplomacy with the US.

US To Host Football World Cup

The men’s World Cup final will take place on 19 July in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026. It will be jointly hosted by sixteen cities — eleven in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada. The tournament will be the first to be hosted by three nations.

Back in December, FIFA also awarded Trump its inaugural ‘Peace Prize’ at the 2026 World Cup draw ceremony in Washington, saying he had “played a pivotal role" in establishing a ceasefire and promoted peace between Israel and Palestine, and that he has sought to end other conflicts.
