Even before he took the oath of office, BJP’s newly-elected representative in Kerala’s Palakkad district kept a promise he made during his campaign for the local body elections.
Deepak, who marked BJP’s first-ever victory in Kodumba panchayat, had promised to reward anyone who could accurately predict his margin of victory. The promise was fulfilled soon after the results were declared and the rewardee turned out to be a Army soldier.
Sabari Girish, who had returned home from Manipur on leave, had forecasted a win for the BJP in Kodumba panchayat where the party had never won a seat before. Amid widespread scepticism about the BJP’s prospects in Kodumba, Girish stood out as the only person to predict that Deepak would emerge victorious by a margin of 211 votes, a figure that matched the final tally.
Deepak’s win is being seen as historic, given that the BJP had no prior representation in the panchayat. Party workers said that Deepak remained confident throughout the campaign, despite the odds. Even before the counting of votes began, Deepak had publicly announced that he would gift gold to anyone who correctly predicted either his victory or his exact majority.
True to his word, Deepak presented Girish with a one-gram gold coin. However, the gesture took a turn when the soldier declined to keep the gold, saying that it should instead be put to use for a larger public cause.
Speaking later, Deepak said he would honour that sentiment by using the gold to purchase sports equipment for young sports enthusiasts in the ward.
